What you will be able to do
- Choose between augmenting an existing process and redesigning it, and justify the choice
- Describe how Cowork carries a whole task while the person reviews the approach and steers
- Plan a small pilot with written criteria before a wider rollout
1.Augment the process, or redesign it
Delegation settles which steps Claude takes on. A second decision is how much of the surrounding process changes. The AI Fluency builders' course names three collaboration modes, and they make a useful scale from light-touch augmentation to deeper redesign:
| Mode | What it means | Workflow example |
|---|---|---|
| Automation | AI does it, you check | Claude extracts PDF tables into a spreadsheet, and a person checks the result |
| Augmentation | You and AI work it together | Claude drafts a reply in a Slack thread, which you review before sharing |
| Agency | AI operates with latitude inside boundaries you set | Claude carries out a whole Cowork task after you review its approach |
Augmenting keeps the process's shape and puts Claude into particular steps. It is the right choice when the structure exists for a reason, such as a regulatory approval chain or a working checklist the team relies on. Claude Code's GitLab integration is a concrete example. It runs inside your existing pipeline with your branch protection and approvals, and every change goes through a merge request so reviewers see the diff and approvals still apply. The principle carries over to non-technical work: if an approval step is required, speed up the work that feeds it (gathering, drafting, checking) and leave the approval itself alone. Claude in Slack works the same way, drafting a thread reply that you review before sharing. The AI Fluency course for educators goes further and argues that augmentation, working with AI to enhance your work, is more powerful than automation.
Redesigning is right when the steps themselves are the waste. Think of people hand-copying the same findings between documents, or translating thousands of files one at a time. Anthropic's write-up on code migrations describes a redesign like this. Instead of translating files by hand, engineers write migration rules and verification loops, and agents work against them. Its core insight is that you don't fix the code, you fix the process that produced it. The human role moves from doing each unit of work to defining the rules and checks.
Anthropic's agent-building guidance adds a brake: find the simplest solution possible, and add complexity only when needed. So redesign when the current structure is the problem and nothing requires it. Augment when the structure is required or already works.
Checkpoint 1 of 5· Exam question
A bank wants Claude to prepare a recommendation for each loan application, but a compliance officer must still approve or reject every decision before it takes effect. Which integration pattern does this describe?
Correct answer: A — A human-in-the-loop pattern where Claude assists with a recommendation and a person retains final decision authority
- A. Correct. Requiring a compliance officer to approve or reject every Claude-generated recommendation before it takes effect is a human-in-the-loop integration, where Claude augments the decision process but a person retains authority.
- B. Incorrect. The scenario explicitly keeps a human approval step, so the decision is not finalized autonomously by Claude.
- C. Incorrect. The scenario does not describe a weekly bulk process; it describes ongoing review of individual recommendations.
- D. Incorrect. Nothing in the scenario has Claude writing directly to the ledger; the compliance officer's approval step sits between the recommendation and any action.
Checkpoint 2 of 5· Match them up
Match each collaboration mode to how the work is split
Tap a term, then the definition that fits it.
These are the builders' course's three modes. They run from Claude doing a checked step to Claude acting with latitude inside set limits.

2.Cowork: Claude takes the whole task, you keep the checkpoints
Agency mode shows up in Claude's own product as Cowork. Instead of answering one prompt, Cowork takes on a whole task and delivers finished outputs to your session, where you can preview and download them. It is available on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.
Starting a session follows a fixed sequence. You open Claude on the web, in the desktop app or in the mobile app. You select "Cowork" in the message box and describe the task you want completed. Then you review Claude's approach and let it run. That review is the human checkpoint before any work starts: you approve how the task will be done, not just what you asked for.
While the task runs, you stay in the loop. Progress indicators show what Claude is doing at each step, and Claude surfaces its reasoning and approach so you can follow along. You can see what Claude is planning and doing throughout, so you can steer when it matters or let it run independently.
This is the Delegation decision built into the product. Claude carries the task from start to finish. The person decides at the start by reviewing the approach, and can step in wherever judgment or approval is needed. Sessions keep running even when the desktop app is closed. Tasks that use local files, your browser or your computer need the desktop app open so Claude can reach them.
Checkpoint 3 of 5· Put it in order
Put the steps for starting a Cowork task in order
- 1.Review Claude's approach, then let it run
- 2.Describe the task you want Claude to complete
- 3.Open Claude on the web, in the desktop app, or in the mobile app
- 4.Select Cowork in the message box
The person describes the task and then reviews Claude's approach before it runs. That review is the checkpoint where judgment comes in before the work starts.

3.Pilot one real task before rolling out
The AI Fluency exercises always start small and real. The builders' course asks you to pick one task that is actually waiting for you, write down what good enough looks like, take one round with AI, and then reflect on what to change next time. The educators' capstone asks you to note up front what done looks like and which parts AI can help with and which stay yours.
At the scale of a team or department, the same idea becomes a phased rollout. Anthropic's admin guidance for Claude Design, a different product, follows this pattern. Setup comes first and broader access second, and you validate that the output meets your standard before opening it up. A phased rollout lets you validate your setup and build internal expertise before broad adoption.
Applied to integrating Claude into a workflow, that gives a sequence:
1. Choose one workflow, and within it the steps Delegation marked as safe to hand off. 2. Write the pass/fail criteria before Claude touches anything. 3. Run the pilot against those criteria, keeping existing reviews and approvals in place. 4. Expand only once the pilot meets the bar and people know how to work with it.
One Diligence sub-component carries into the rollout. Transparency Diligence means being honest about AI's role. The people who rely on the workflow should know which steps Claude now does and where a person still reviews. Framing that message for stakeholders is a separate skill, covered in its own lesson.
Checkpoint 4 of 5· Exam question
A hospital wants to integrate Claude into its clinical documentation workflow to help physicians summarize patient charts, where accuracy is far more important than response speed or cost. Which starting approach best fits this integration?
Correct answer: A — Start with the most capable model, since accuracy outweighing cost considerations favors this choice
- A. Correct. Applications where accuracy outweighs cost considerations, such as clinical documentation, are a case for starting with the most capable model rather than a faster, cheaper one.
- B. Incorrect. Prioritizing speed and low cost does not match a scenario where the stated priority is accuracy over speed or cost.
- C. Incorrect. Optimizing for output token pricing contradicts the scenario's explicit priority of accuracy over cost.
- D. Incorrect. Client-side tool support is unrelated to the summarization accuracy this clinical documentation workflow needs.
Checkpoint 5 of 5· Check yourself
A department head wants Claude in every team process by the end of the quarter. What is the most defensible first step?
A phased rollout validates the setup and builds expertise before broad adoption. Starting with one scoped, measured pilot does both.

Exam traps
Each one states something that sounds right. Open it to see what is actually true.
1.The way to fix a slow, regulation-required approval chain is to let Claude take over or skip the approvals. Why is that wrong?
When the structure is required, augment it. Claude speeds up the work that feeds each step, and reviews and approvals still apply.
Covered in Augment the process, or redesign it
2.The most autonomous integration is always the best one, so every workflow should be redesigned around an agent. Why is that wrong?
Anthropic recommends the simplest solution that works and adding complexity only when it is needed. Augmenting a working process is often the right answer.
